New staff member Derek Miller shares a few facts about himself with the Central Times
August 29, 2019
Q: What department are you working in? What’s your full time position?
A: I’m in the CTE department [Career and Technical Education], and I teach Consumer Economics and computer programming classes.
Q: What is your background in teaching? Where did you go to school, and where have you taught before?
A: I went to the University of Illinois. I got a degree in computer science and statistics. I got my teaching certificate from Aurora right after that. And then before I came here, I taught computer classes for 13 years in Yorkville.
Q: What are your hobbies, or things students should know about you?
A: I like to run. I actually run in the school some days. I like a lot of different sports. I like watching baseball, playing video games, and hanging out with my kids.
Q: What inspired you to become a teacher?
A: My junior year of college, I taught computer classes in a summer camp, and I really enjoyed it. I knew I liked computers before that, but it was what told me that I kind of like teaching too. So I finished my computer science degree, and then I got my teaching certificate right after that.
Q: What is your teaching philosophy? How do you want your students to learn?
A: I just want students to learn. I don’t care if it takes you multiple tries to get something… I’m going to keep giving students chances to show that they understand it, even if it takes them time to understand it.
