Q: What’s your name?
A: “My name is Kim Cancio.”
Q: What is your position here at Central?
A: “I am an ASL 2 teacher.”
Q: What did you do before coming to Central?
A: “I taught ASL at Waubonsie for two years.”
Q: How are you liking this job at Central so far?
A: “I love it. I mean, it’s what I chose to do, right? But I like high school kids and I love ASL and the deaf community, so it’s a nice fit.”
Q: What first drew you to learning ASL?
A: “I learned the manual alphabet in fourth grade and I always remembered it. It didn’t come back again until my senior year in high school when I literally just got a little postcard in the mail from a private college downstate that was like, hey, we got a deaf education program and I was like, oh, I’m going to do that. That was all it took, one postcard.”
Q: What degrees do you have?
A: “I have a degree in special education for the deaf and hard of hearing from Illinois State University.”
Q: What is your day to day life like at Central?
A: “So I actually start my day at North and I’m their first period through third period. And then I travel during fourth period and I teach fifth, seventh, and eighth here.”
Q: What are your hobbies/interests outside of school?
A: “I would say my hobbies are my family. I also like to ride my motorcycle but I don’t get to do that very often because I’m busy. If I could, I would be doing that all the time.”
