The district gathered at the Administration Building on Dec. 2 to discuss improvements to the school and other recent issues.

The meeting invited Jefferson Junior High’s principal and vice-principal, Monica Cabico and Joseph Castellanos, to discuss issues at their school and plans to attack these issues. During the presentation, Cabico noted that Jefferson is the most diverse middle school in the district, and the most economically disadvantaged.

Additionally, board members made a short statement on the feedback received from forums held to discuss implicit bias. They noted that there is still work to be done to improve communication among students.

Future legislation for 2020 was also discussed, such as handling gun violence in schools. Board members expressed satisfaction that Resolution I, the resolution to arm teachers, was voted down. Resolution III, however, passed to provide additional funding for armed personnel in schools.

Other topics that were briefly discussed include independent PE classes, e-learning for emergency days, legalization around illegal substances, and the 2019 tax levy workshop.

A large portion of the meeting also focused on school improvement plans, noting a focus on improving math proficiency. Additionally, summer school was discussed, with board members hoping to maximize opportunities for students in order to advance learning and offer more courses.
