“Easy A,” directed by Will Gluck, comes off as any other chick flick when first heard of. However, with its quirky screenplays and brilliant actors, this movie does a remarkable job of exposing the life of the clichéd anonymous turned notorious schoolgirl.
The main plotline of the story revolves around Olive Penderghast, an unknown high school student with a flawless reputation. Portraying Olive’s character is actress Emma Stone. With her great acting skills and witty sense of humor, Stone pulls of the role perfectly.
The entire film is a narration conducted by Olive on her web cam, talking about how she got herself into a certain sticky situation.
A major chunk of the film focuses on the Nathaniel Hawthorne’s, “The Scarlet Letter.” As the movie progresses, Olive’s life becomes just like Hester Prynne’s from the story.
Olive decides to help her male friends by telling some little white lies, but soon it comes back to bite her. Rumors start flying around that Olive has slept with many of her male peers. But the funny thing is, she doesn’t deny any of them. And soon enough, Olive is dubbed the school tramp.
Many of the supporting actors add wonders to the film. Actress Amanda Bynes performed incredibly in the movie as well. Her character, Marianne Bryant, is a dedicated Christian who doesn’t seem too happy with Olive’s “vile” lifestyle.
There is also Olive’s best friend, or ex-best friend who wants people to see her as a scandalous slut, but in reality is an innocent little virgin.
All the adults in the film seem to be just as foolish as the kids, adding a hilarious aspect to the entire story. Some of the scenes involving the adults attempting to give wholesome advice to their juniors will leave some people laughing so hard they’ll need to pee. Lets just say all the adults in the film are very, how would you say it…broadminded?
The movie also refers to many 80’s chick flicks. Throughout the story, Olive mentions here love for this genre of entertainment, and in the end her dream is fulfilled, with a musical number and all.
This movie will make you giggle relentlessly, cry for a bit, make you happy, but mostly make you die of laugher. With its raw sense of sexual humor and amusing portrayal of how rumors spread like wildfire, “Easy A” definitely gets and easy A from me.
