14 Things to do on an extreme weather, cancelled school day

Maya Fenter, Front Page Editor

Once the excitement of school being cancelled subsides, you are now under the realization that the bitter cold and snow-covered roads have trapped you inside. Despite the winter weather confining you to your home, there are still many different ways to enjoy your day off while staying warm.

1. Catch up on sleep

Though school has only been in session for a few days since winter break ended, students have had to get back into routine fairly quickly—waking up early, having hours of homework and getting to bed late. What better way to take advantage of this spontaneous day off than to sleep in?

2. Watch movies

Invite some friends over, pop some popcorn, huddle in some cozy blankets and have a movie-watching party.

3. Relax by the fire

There’s nothing better than spending a chilly day next to the fireplace. Grab some marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate and make some delicious s’mores to enjoy by the fire.

4. Start a scrapbook

Get in touch with your creative side. Gather some photographs of you and your family, friends, a fun vacation or anything else and make a collection of your favorite memories.

5. Spend the day in pajamas

They’re warm, comfortable and chances are you won’t be going anywhere, so why not?

6. Do some baking

Find a recipe for cookies, cupcakes or whatever your heart desires. Not only will turning the oven on help warm up your house, you’ll also have some freshly baked goods to enjoy.

7. Start a new T.V. show

Rather than starting that show you’ve been eager to watch on a Monday night when you still have loads of homework to do, use this chilly day to curl up and watch as many episodes as you can.

8. Get competitive

Challenge family and friends to a variety of games. Play board games such as Monopoly, Clue and The Game of Life, or card games like Spoons, Crazy Eights and Slapjack. Another option is to dust off the Wii and brush-up on your Wii Sports or Mario Kart skills.

9. Catch up on schoolwork

Though this is probably the last thing a student wants to hear on a day off of school, snow days or extreme weather days are the perfect opportunity to get caught up if you’ve fallen behind. Take an hour or two to review material you don’t understand or makeup assignments.

10. Learn something new

Perhaps you’ve always wanted to learn how to knit or how to juggle or how to speak another language but have never had the time. Days off are the perfect chance to teach yourself something new.

11:  Build a fort

Revisit your childhood days by building a fort. Gather couch cushions, pillows, blankets and chairs to create the perfect hideout for a winter afternoon.

12: Redecorate and reorganize

Revamp your room with wall decorations, a new color scheme or by simply rearranging your furniture. Another option is to spend your free time organizing and decluttering your workspace which can help reduce stress. Also look through your closet for any old clothes that you can donate and get some cash for in return.

13: Enjoy a hot beverage

Whether it’s hot chocolate, tea or coffee, a warm drink is a tasty way to fight the cold.

14: Outdoor endeavors

If by chance you’re brave enough to face the frigid temperatures, there are a few neat things to do involving the cold weather. Try standing outside, blowing some bubbles and watching them freeze. Or, for the more adventurous, take some boiling water and pour it into a cup. Take the cup outside, throw the water (far away from you!), and watch it turn into steam.
