Oscar Predictions: Will “Birdman” win all?
February 22, 2015
Tonight, the 87th Academy Awards will air, and the best movies will be recognized by receiving one of the most prestigious awards in the world. There have been thousands of people predicting who will win each award, so I decided to add to that mix. Here are my 2015 Oscar predictions.
Best Picture–“Birdman” or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)/ “The Imitation Game”
Okay, this category is tricky. I think that “Birdman” will win the Oscar simply because the actors did extremely well and it is a very relatable film for the Academy. After watching it, I understood why so many of my friends hated it yet the critics enjoyed it, it was obviously made for people involved in the movie/acting business. But overall, I guess I did enjoy “Birdman” at times. It was a very artsy film that was slightly confusing and the cinematography was utterly amazing.
That being said, if I were to choose the recipient of the Academy Award, I would choose the Imitation Game. Now, I’m not a film critic, but I genuinely enjoyed the Imitation Game both times I saw it. The actors portrayed their roles well the plot was complex and deep. For me, this earns the Imitation Game an Oscar.
Best Director–Richard Linklater for “Boyhood”
This category isn’t even a competition. As soon as Linklater decided to dedicate 12 years of his life to this film, he practically secured the Oscar for himself.
Best Actor–Eddie Redmayne for “The Theory of Everything”
In 2012, Redmayne rose to national attention for his role as Marius in “Les Misérables.” As a fan of the musical, I instantly became an Eddie Redmayne fan. Ever since, I’ve been waiting for him to get another big role and this year he did, starring as Stephen Hawking in”The Theory of Everything”. I thought he was amazing. I read that he altered the alignment of his spine because he was so dedicated to staying in character, and, to me, that earns Redmayne an Oscar.
Best Actress–Felicity Jones for “The Theory of Everything”
This category sucks this year. Honestly, although I thought Jones did a good job in “The Theory of Everything,” is this really the best performance by a woman in a movie this year? I don’t think so. I’m not diminishing Jones at all, I’m just surprised Hollywood hasn’t offered any more quality roles to a woman this year in a big-budget film, that’s all. I would give Jones an Oscar in this category not because she was exceptional, but because she didn’t suck.
Best Supporting Actor–Edward Norton for”Birdman” or (“The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance”)
One of my biggest complaints about”Birdman” was as soon as about ¾ of the way through, Norton just seemed to stop showing up. He stole every scene he was in but once he left, I felt the film started to get bad.
Best Supporting Actress–Emma Stone for “Birdman” or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
“Birdman” seems to be hitting the mark this year with supporting actors. Stone has been in the Hollywood picture for a while now, but this role was a big step for her into bigger, more serious films. My favorite scenes in”Birdman” were the ones between Stone and Norton. Stone really committed herself to this role and I think she deserves an Oscar for it.
