Television show review: "The Last Man on Earth"

Fox’s new series The Last Man on Earth, was molded from comedic gold and is unlike anything else on television.

Created, written and produced by SNL star Will Forte, the series begins in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2020 when a disease wipes out every last man, woman and child off the face of the earth.  Forte’s character Phil is presumably the only survivor.  Set with the daunting task of finding another living person, Phil travels the country scavenging for priceless pieces of art and searching for any human contact.

Alas when his mission to not be alone fails, Phil settles in his hometown of Tucson, Ariz.  Plastering the message “Alive in Tucson” on billboards around the country, Phil sits back and waits for a visitor.  With the world as his blank canvas, Phil has the ability to do anything he ever dreamed of.  Drink all day and destroy things all night, Phil takes advantage of the new world he lives in.

As time passes and Phil becomes more and more lonely, depression begins to set it.  He starts to talk to balls with faces painted on them and flirt with a mannequin in the nearby clothes store.  All he really needs now is another person to arrive, preferably a female.

Let me stop myself before I ruin anything, but a show like this with so many possibilities will make any type of viewer laugh.  As other scenarios and characters are introduced, many different comedic avenues open up.  As conflicting personalities and opposing viewpoints on how to act in this new world begin to arise, there are limitless possibilities as to where the writers and directors could take this show.

The concept of “the end of the world” is new to television, especially in the comedic sense.  There is nothing else like this out there, and it’s not too late to begin to watch it now.  The series premiered on March 1, 2015 and is only a few episodes in.  New episodes are every sunday 9/8C.

I highly recommend at least watching the first episode and seeing how it feels.  The constant quick jokes and laugh out loud personalities will not disappoint.  It’ll be exciting to see how far this show can go in the coming seasons.
