Film Review: ‘Split’

Yuna Lee, Staff Writer

When someone is called “two-faced,” it usually never means anything good. While having someone with two different personalities is bad enough, having someone that takes on twenty-three different personalities is not any better.

Written by M. Night Shyamalan, “Split” is an exciting thriller in which the action and suspense kick off from the very start of the movie. Throughout the course of the story, main character Casey Cook (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) and her two friends struggle greatly to escape from their underground location that Kevin (played by James McAvoy) happily calls home.

During their time being kidnapped, the three girls meet Hedwig, Dennis and many others, all completely different characters that make up for the twenty-three convoluted personalities displayed by Kevin. During this time, a select few of Kevin’s personalities foretell the girls that a new, inhuman-like personality is “coming for them,” and that is to be much worse than the rest. And although Kevin’s therapist Dr. Karen Fletcher (played by Betty Buckley) grows concerned due to unusual behavior, she is unknowing of the fact that a twenty-fourth personality can actually occur.

There are many factors that cause the movie to come off as thrilling as it is. The unique camera angles and crowded spaces that make up Kevin’s home deem effective in creating a sense of heightened suspense and fear. Unpredictable with just the right amount of scary, it is an enjoyable movie. However, the story could have had an ending with a very different outcome if the characters had made different (smarter perhaps) decisions from earlier on.

With a plot well put together nevertheless, McAvoy’s performance of bipolarly opposite characters is impressive. It is clear that a lot of thought is put into every shot, which can be seen all the way through the ending credits. While it may be an unideal movie for younger children, it is a great suspense movie that many can enjoy.
