After an almost 20 year coaching Career, Troy Adams, Naperville Central’s varsity boys soccer coach has recently reached his 200th career win.
According to Adams, his memories made with players have been one of his fondest memories while coaching.
“I’ve learned a lot from him in regards to soccer,” assistant coach Mike Ortiz said. “But just on a personal level, our relationship has grown.”
Adams is a two-time Illinois Coach of the Year for IHSA Boys Soccer, winning the award in both 2012 and 2023.
In the 2022 state championships, Naperville Central’s boys varsity soccer team came out on top with the win against Romeoville High School.
“I think that to win, it takes discipline, it takes a commitment to teamwork,” head coach Troy Adams said.
It takes more than just hard work according to Adams, you need to trust in each other and push each other.
“I think the players felt validated for believing in themselves,” Adams said.
Adams also credits his success to the fact that his family is there to support him. In the 2022-2023 season, he was able to coach his sons through a state championship and a 26-3-1 record.
“So just kind of that family feel made that year super, super special, and just kind of something we’ll always be able to reflect on and enjoy,” Adams said.
Support from Central players and parents helped drive motivation for the team, according to Adams.
“They feed off their parents being there, you know, they feed off of their families being there,” Adams said.
Adams brings hard work and dedication to his team which is demonstrated through his dedicated players.
“The teams that have discipline and the teams that have a sense of purpose and a sense of community have been the ones that have been the most successful,” Adams said.
The support from others, such as Adam’s players, have helped him achieve success on the field. Adams credits those around him for getting to the place where he is now.
“You don’t have success as an individual,” Adams said. “I learned that, over the last 20 years, coaching is other people [helping] you on that journey.”
