Are the Chicago Bears back? I sure hope so! Through week five we have a winning record, which for a traditionally terrible team is amazing. Our roster is composed of a quarterback who is improving every week, three stud wide receivers, and a top-rated defense in the league.
The season hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows, though. There are serious concerns with the coaching staff and the offensive line. Shane Waldron, the Bears’ offensive coordinator, may have the title for the worst fourth down play call in NFL history thanks to a fourth and one call that resulted in -12 yards in a game against the Colts. It is not just the coaching that has been off to a rocky start, either. The starting offensive line has not been good. Injuries have been rampant and most importantly they are getting bulldozed every play. Quarterback Caleb Williams, who we paid a $25.5 million signing bonus to, was sacked 16 times in four games. That is the second most of any quarterback in the league.
On the other hand, there are many things to smile about if you are a Bears fan. We have three wide receivers that could all be considered the number one option on the team. Keenan Allen is widely regarded as the best route runner in the entire NFL. DJ Moore has proved he can be the best. Last year he had over 1,300 receiving yards which was sixth best in the league. Rome Odunze, our third wide receiver, could be considered a number one on many teams. Odunze was drafted ninth overall by the Bears and is starting to look like an amazing draft pick. I think that once more chemistry builds between Williams and his receivers they will be an unstoppable force.
The Bears’ offensive potential is not the only thing to rave about. Their defense is one of the top-rated in the league. They’ve been an unstoppable force and helped keep the Bears in the game during the first four weeks. Many fantasy football players believe they are a top three defense in the league. Montez Sweat leads the defense on the edge. Sweat has two sacks and one forced fumble through week five. Past the stats, you can even see the havoc he wrecks on the field just by viewing the games. Their secondary is also very elite, led by Jaylon Johnson and Jaquan Brisker. The Bears have six interceptions through four games, which is good for fourth-best in the entire league.
I believe that the Chicago Bears could be a top 10 team in the league, but not with this coaching staff. I think that Matt Eberflus is a tool. It makes no sense to bring the greatest offensive prospect in recent history into a team with a defensive-minded head coach. You can already see Caleb Williams’ confidence is not the same as it was in college. He is nervous about making deep throws or using his legs. I think that we should have parted with our head coach last year and brought in a whole new staff.
The Bears are over .500, so he is doing some things right. The Bears have one of the easiest early-season schedules in the league and I think they should come out with a record of 6-3 after week 9. These next weeks are a huge test for the Bears offense and their coaching staff to prove themselves as a team that can close games and make the playoffs.
