Future Problem Solvers held their first-ever meeting on Monday, Nov. 4. The club is led by sophomores Sreeram Potnuru, Magaranth Rajkumar, Deb Dash and Hazim Hasan.
FPS is a global research club involving more than 30,000 students from 14 countries competing in regional, state, national and international tournaments. Each team or individual competitor is given a scenario about a futuristic problem and asked to create a solution within a limited time period.
“Given [a] scenario, you’re supposed to find problems that fit into certain categories,” Potnuru said. “You have to find problems, create solutions for those problems, find the best solution and then present your solution in an essay format.”
These solutions are then graded by a panel of judges, and winners advance to the next competition. Competitions run until around April.
The club’s co-founders collectively participated in FPS last year by themselves.
“This year, we just wanted to bring it to the school so it’s easier for everyone else to do it,” Potnuru said.
“I like solving problems about our future and our world; I think it’s really important,” sophomore Mahi Dharmavaram said.
FPS meetings are held every Monday in room 46 at 3:20 p.m.
