Mac Miller’s long-awaited posthumous album, “Balloonerism,” was released on Jan. 17. The album was reportedly in progress before his passing in 2018 and reflects his evolving artistry while highlighting a period of creative experimentation. “Ballonerism” captures some themes of self-reflection, growth, and life’s highs and lows, which stay true to the authenticity that defined Miller’s music. While each song carries its own weight and meaning, here is my ranking of the 14-track album, from least to favorite.
14. Tambourine Dream
This track is only 33 seconds long and solely features tambourine melodies. While it’s an interesting artistic choice, it feels like a placeholder rather than a full song.
13. Transformation (feat. Delusional Thomas)
This one takes an unusual route with Miller’s alter ego, Delusional Thomas, making an appearance. The eerie and experimental vibe is intriguing but could feel out there for some listeners.
12. Mrs. Deborah Downer
With heavy percussion, this song explores Miller’s struggles with addiction and how they clashed with his career. It’s heartfelt, but the overwhelming percussion can make it hard to truly appreciate the lyrics.
11. Excelsior
Miller’s song feels more like an interlude than a standalone song. Its ethereal vibe sets a great mood but doesn’t leave a lasting impression.
10. Shangri-La
The production on this track is incredibly intricate and cool. However, the song doesn’t quite stand out as much as others on the album, which could be because its mellow vibe lacks a strong hook or moment to really grab one’s attention.
9. DJ’s Chord Organ (feat. SZA)
I am a huge SZA fan, and SZA’s feature adds an amazing touch, complementing Miller’s style perfectly. The production is stellar, though the lack of lyrical depth keeps it from being ranked higher.
8. Stoned
The guitar riffs in this track are mesmerizing and give it a raw, emotional feel. It is not the most complex song, but it is one that leaves an impact.
7. Friendly Hallucinations
This is a feel-good, summery track that leans heavily into Miller’s hip-hop roots. The upbeat lyrics make it super fun and chill to listen to anytime.
6. Funny Papers
I adore sad music, because it always has a way of sticking with you, and this track is no exception. Its somber tone is balanced by meaningful lyrics that showcase Miller’s reflective side.
5. Tomorrow Will Never Know
At almost 12 minutes long, this song is a journey. While some parts feel slow due to the lack of lyrics, the beautiful background music makes it worth the time.
4. Do You Have A Destination?
Miller’s voice shines on this track, paired with lyrics that feel both personal and poetic. It’s a gorgeous track that I really enjoy.
3. Manakins
Dylan Reynolds’ feature adds a hauntingly beautiful layer to this song about death. The uncanny lyrics and captivating sound make it a standout track.
2. 5 Dollar Pony Rides
This upbeat track reminds me of Miller’s iconic song “Dang!” It’s catchy, full of energy and features some of Miller’s best vocals on the album.
1. Rick’s Piano
The album’s crown jewel is “Rick’s Piano,” a track that blends beautiful piano melodies with Miller’s stunning voice. The lyrics flow effortlessly, creating an emotional and unforgettable listening experience.
Overall, “Balloonerism” is a testament to Mac Miller’s artistry to evoke deep emotions through his music. Each track offers something unique, making this album a must-listen for both long-time fans and newcomers.
