Is the Kansas City Chiefs dynasty finally over? I believe it is. After the embarrassing performance of Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl blowout on Feb. 9, I don’t think the Chiefs can bounce back next season.
I expect that tight end Kelce is going to retire over the off season. After 12 seasons, it’s time for the 10-time Pro Bowler to hang up the cleats. He did not have a bad year but for his standards, it was not great. In the Super Bowl, Kelce ended the night with four catches, although one was a shovel pass. His age is starting to show, and as a result, he looks slow and a shell of what he once was. Mahomes is now 3-2 in the Super Bowl with none of his appearances being all that exceptional, only having thrown seven interceptions in total. In his most recent he threw two interceptions, with one being returned for a touchdown. They were absolutely terrible throws. They were rushed, soft and it was a downright bad look for the Chiefs. Their leading player in rush yards this game was Patrick Mahomes as they could not get the ground game going at all. However, they had a bright spot in Xavier Worthy who went for eight catches, 157 yards and two touchdowns. Although his second touchdown was in garbage time when they were down by nearly 30 points, the game was boring.
People who claim that Mahomes is the greatest football player to ever play are living in a dream world. In the biggest game of his career, with his fourth Super Bowl championship and an opportunity to three-peat for the Lombardi trophy, he choked, and he choked so hard. I have never seen someone as happy as Tom Brady on the broadcast because this game solidified Brady as the greatest star to ever play, and I don’t think he will ever be dethroned.
I’m also not going to blow over the fact of the Super Bowl MVP absolutely dicing up the No. 1 rated defense in the league. Jalen Hurts went off. He was incredibly accurate throughout the night, throwing 17 for 22 and just seemed to be clicking with all his receivers. DeVonta Smith, A.J. Brown, Jahan Dotson and Saquon Barkley all had over 40 receiving yards. The Eagles looked unstoppable even without their biggest threat in Saquon Barkley performing his best in the run game. I believe their defense was the true MVP of the game though.
The Eagles’ defense arguably held the best player over the last decade to 22 points and nearly zero points through the first three quarters. This is the first time in Mahomes’ career that he has been shut out in half. By far the most entertaining player in the game was Cooper DeJean. He was the first white cornerback to start in the Super Bowl in 24 years, and on his birthday he had the biggest game of his still early career. As a rookie he had an interception which he threw for six in the Super Bowl after Mahomes threw straight into his arms.
I don’t see a way that the Chiefs can come back from this terrible game they had. I think that their dynasty is over, they have been dethroned and I believe they won’t return with Patrick Mahomes and this group of players. After making three Super Bowls in a row, players are due for pay days. In the off season, the Chiefs will have to deal with contracts that they just can’t afford and players they just can’t re-sign. I think teams have figured out Patrick Mahomes. He is just not that guy anymore. The Chiefs dynasty is over.
